APPLYFOLIO EDITORIAL · REVIEWED OCTOBER 2026
Write a cover letter that adds context
A cover letter can explain why your background is relevant to a particular role. It should add context rather than repeat every resume line.
Open with the role
Identify the position and employer. Explain a specific, truthful reason for applying when you have one. Avoid claims about the company that you have not checked.
Choose a relevant example
Use one or two examples connected to the posting. Describe what you did and why it relates. Do not invent a personal connection or employer value merely to sound enthusiastic.
Make the next step easy
Close courteously and provide contact details if needed. Follow the requested submission method. Check the company and role names carefully when adapting an earlier letter.
Treat generated text as a draft
ApplyFolio uses structured templates, not an AI service. Replace general sentences with your own reasons and examples. Read the exported file to ensure no instructions or bracketed reminders remain.
Put this into practice
Open the resume builder to organize your own information, or review our fictional resume examples. Export a local JSON backup before leaving the editor.
This is general writing guidance, not an employer policy or a hiring guarantee. Follow the requirements in your actual application.
