Resume or CV: choose the document the application requests

The words resume and CV are used differently across countries, industries and institutions. The application instructions are the best starting point.

Read the actual instructions

Look for a page limit, required sections, file format and whether the employer supplies a form. If a posting says CV without more detail, review the organization’s application guidance before assuming it expects a long academic history.

Prepare an adaptable core

Keep a private master document of your education, roles, projects, publications and training. Build a shorter targeted version from it. The master record helps you keep dates and titles consistent across applications.

Academic applications may ask for more

A research or academic application may request publications, teaching and research details. Include those when relevant and requested. Do not add them as empty headings to a general entry-level application.

Avoid unnecessary personal details

Do not add identity documents, bank details or sensitive personal information simply to fill space. Follow legitimate application requirements and consider what is necessary at the current stage.

Put this into practice

Open the resume builder to organize your own information, or review our fictional resume examples. Export a local JSON backup before leaving the editor.

This is general writing guidance, not an employer policy or a hiring guarantee. Follow the requirements in your actual application.
